Wardrobe Essential: the Leather Jacket pt. 2

Here’s the final result of my fashion sketch! It was completed with watercolor and cleaned up in Photoshop.

These days, it seems the leather moto is an on-trend must-have. The price tag can average well over $300; so I see it as something of an “investment.” For what you could end up spending, this jacket should last forever.

I’m not sure about tailoring leather, so I wanted something that looked great off the hanger. (A tall order for a short girl.)

My hunt for the perfectly proportioned piece lasted two years. (My friend, also spent a year choosing her leather love.) But, it was well worth it!

Wardrobe Essential: the Leather Jacket pt. 1

And now, back to some classic Sketchbook Closet fashion illustration. (Don’t worry, Wedding Wednesday will be back soon!)

A while ago, my friend recommended posting work in progress. After much deliberation, I’m finally getting around to it. It’s fun for me to see the process of the pieces; I hope you’ll enjoy it too!

The subject I really wanted to focus on is my (not so) shiny new leather jacket. It’s a recent purchase and I just can’t wait to get it on my back again. I plan to finish this sketch with watercolor.

The pad I’m using is an Arches hot press watercolor block. I prefer hot press because it has a smooth surface (which is better for scanning.) Watercolor blocks are also easy since they dry flat without ripples or curls.

The leather of this “cargo biker” jacket is really soft and supple. It has a lot of texture, highs and lows, and definition. I tried to express that with shaky line work and a rough pencil quality.

Since this is a black jacket, a lot of the lines will get covered up by the dark paint. But, I’ll be able to pull them out with white ink (or Photoshop.) I really can’t wait to add color and see the finished product.

I hope you like this new part of Sketchbook Closet; thanks for viewing.

Kate Spade: Waverly Street Drew Handbag

Fashion illustration of my favorite Kate Spade handbag, the Waverly Street Drew bag.Kate Spade $$ Waverly Street Drew Bag (On sale for $199!)

If you follow my instagram you may have seen a page in my sketchbook with all of my handbags. I was toying around with the idea of doing a “bag gallery” of all the bags I own. Most of you thought it was a fun idea (I do too!) I’m still trying to figure out how I want to format it. But, for now – here’s an entry into the archives for that plan.

This fashion illustration is of one of my favorite handbags – My Kate Spade Waverly Street Drew satchel.

I actually got this baby on Gilt during a flash sale. Sites like Gilt get me every time (which is why I don’t shop them often.) You know how they only let you hold an item in your shopping cart for a limited amount of time? That stresses me out! Plus – competing with all the other shoppers for items as soon as the sale goes live?! No wonder this was an impulse buy!!

Fortunately, it turned out to be a great find. I love it. It’s the perfect size, has lots of cute details, and is perfect for lady-like functions such as baby showers and tea time!

Oddly enough, this is VNg’s favorite handbag. He really loves it for some reason… It’s funny to me when boys have very strong preferences to fashion.

Congratulations to the two winners of the giveaway. They are Claire – and – Victoria (of Oh-So Pretty)!!

Thanks to everyone for participating and offering suggestions for the future of the blog. It seems like most of you just want the hits to keep on coming. I will definitely try to continue to deliver great outfits with a mix of price points. And, I promise to focus on what to wear during these super cold days!

Some of my favorite suggestions were: more gift guides, Instagram videos and tutorials, tech accessory and soft goods round-ups, and collaborations.

I’ve been wanting to do some sort of tutorial for a while, but just haven’t been sure how to spin it. I’ll be sure to add it to the line-up. I really think having some videos on Instagram could be really cool… although I’m not sure how I would videotape and draw at the same time. (I guess VNg would have to help…)

And, I would really love to do some more collaborations. Anyone out there who is interested and has any ideas — shoot me an email – I’d love to hear about it!!

Thanks again…. and thanks for viewing! Happy Humpday!!

Grey Denim and Double Zippers

Pretty J.Crew colorblock double zipper sweater with Free People light grey ultra skinny jeans

Today’s Fashion Illustration:
double zipper color-block sweater $$ J.Crew or $ Gapgrey skinny jeans $ Free People or $$$ Acne, oxfords $ Modclothpose inspired by Yewon Kim (previously) of GirlSack

I am IN LOVE with this sweater I got from J.Crew. It is so cute and I love the double zipper detailing!!! It’s slightly itchy so next time I might layer a button-down (the way they have it styled on the site.) J.Crew is giving a promo of 25% off off your purchase of $100 or more… so dooo it (with code: GOSHOP. By the way, a friend and I made a late night Zara trip the other day and… did I mention I am a complete shopping enabler…?)

In other news, I just got these grey skinny jeans from Free People. I have been looking for grey jeans for a while and I was obsessed with ones I saw on Oh-So Pretty… but, I thought this FP pair was more realistic for my (wedding planning) real-life budget. The FP pair are pretty spandex-y so they are SUPER tight. But, if you squeeze in – they look great!! I had to shorten them (of course) but I didn’t have to slim them down at the ankle, which was fantastico.

I feel like these grey jeans and this color-block sweater are going to be some of my winter staples… What are you in love with this season?

Oh yeah, don’t forget to enter the giveaway if you haven’t already. I’ll be choosing the winner this Sunday and announcing early next week – so… enter!

Thanks for viewing today’s fashion illustration, hope you liked it!

What I Wore: My Engagement Party Outfit

Lanvin blanc inspired dress.

Today’s Fashion Illustration:

 $ Steve Madden or $$$ Manolo Blahnikpeplum dress $$$ Alice + Olivia or $$ asosgrey cardigan $$$ Net-a-Porter or $$ J.Crewsingle pearl necklace Dogeared, pearl & diamond studs $$$ Bloomgindale’s or $$$$

Lanvin bridal blanc inspired dress for our engagement party.

VNg proposed right before my birthday so we celebrated with most of our friends the night of my party. But, we didn’t get to see our family, so we decided to throw an intimate engagement party. (Other brides out there, did you have an engagement party? We also thought it was a nice way to introduce the families.)

Searching for the place was almost as stressful as finding the real venue (haha, yeah right. More on that next time.) We ate in a new place nearly every night for two weeks trying to find the right spot. (Mad props to VNg as probably one of the most patient and supportive guys ever. He’s been incredible during the planning process–humoring my obsessive perfectionism. Sorry, other dudes whose girlfriends/wives read this blog, but it’s true.)

In the end, we found the cutest spot ever in Union City, NJ. We had a great contact (Christine!) who was very accommodating. The food was good and everyone had a great time!

As you might remember, I LOVE Lanvin’s Blanche collection. So, I knew I wanted to wear something like this stunner. Believe it or not, I don’t have $3-4K to blow on a dress. So, naturally I decided to make one. (Yes, I know just how to create extra tasks when I’m already stretched thin. I can’t be the only one, right?!?!)

The Lanvin is made of scuba material. Mine’s stretch cotton; in retrospect, I wish I’d chosen something with a little spandex and a little more substance. (Throughout the day, it held some pretty severe creases. Womp womp.) But, considering I hadn’t sewn something that complex since college, I think it looked decent.  (The whole thing was lined and the bodice even had boning!)

I like the simplicity of the Lanvin dress, but I added decorative stitching at the side seams to  accentuate the waistline. (If you want to see, check out Instagram.)

Well, there you go. I hope you guys liked the first (of many? should I do more??) “Wedding Wednesday.”

Also, don’t forget to enter the giveaway to win an original piece of artwork (by me) and a cute convertible handbag!

Cool Summer: Denim with Dots

I’m taking a break from wedding planning to share a new fashion illustration. This is an easy ensemble I threw together when temperatures decided to take a tiny dip the other week. I hope you like it!

Today’s Fashion Illustration:
denim dot shirt J.Crew (or $ Urban Outfitters), skinny rinse denim (or $$ Nordstrom),  patent wedges Guess (outlet) or $$ Michael Kors and $$$ Jimmy Choobe mine studs $$$ ShopbopLegacy Penny $$ Coach

I like this outfit because it’s incredibly easy and comfortable. But, I like to think it’s also a teensy bit polished (because of the fun shoes.)

Now that I’m focusing most of my attention (and funds) on our upcoming nuptials, I’ve been putting the wallet on lock down. So, it forces me to get even more creative with my outfitting. I was pleasantly surprised to pull these pieces together.

I’m a little hesitant to pair denim with denim – but I felt like the shades and patterns helped keep them apart enough to stay cute. (Of course when I asked VNg, he replied, “I’m not sure…” as he usually does with less “common” combos I show him.) Well, I think it was okay… what do you think?

Summer Nights: White Dress with Laser Cutouts

Now that summer’s in full swing, I find it’s harder and harder to catch a quiet moment to work on Le Blog. But, here you have it, a cute and easy fashion illustration of my latest birthday ensemble.

This year might be my best birthday ever!

Today’s Fashion Illustration:
knit dress $ off 5th (or $ Urban Outfitters), braided belt $ F21 (or $$ Anthropologie), Hart sandals $ Lauren by Ralph Lauren, studded clutch $ Aldo accessories, heart ring $$ Catbird NYC, Luster necklace by Good Season

I’m not sure if I’m the only one who feels this way, but once June rolls around – it’s as if I’ve lost my weekends. The barbecues, birthday parties, and beach outings pile up and with the blink of an eye, it’s September.

Fortunately, it’s still just July and there are plenty of summer weeks left to enjoy.

I wasn’t sure how much personal information I wanted to share on Sketchbook Closet, but I’m too excited to contain it! My birthday is this week and VNg has given me the best birthday gift of all: he’s asked me to marry him!

So, sorry readers… if the posts have been far and few between this busy busy summer – they might decrease further when my wedding obsession goes into high gear. (Even though it was only a couple of days ago, I’ve already registered for the Knot and perused Style Me Pretty more times than I can count. Hehe.)

Still, I’m going to try to keep posting (at least twice a week) and I can’t wait to keep you updated on the exciting events!

Thank you so so so much for viewing! Happy Summertime!

Summer Ensemble: Chambray Dress & Sweet Accessories

Light denim and bright accessories!

Today’s fashion illustration:
chambray shirtdress Madewell (or $ Target), trench (or $$$ on sale! Burberry Brit), envelope shoulder bag (or $ Urban Outfitters), heart ring ($$ Catbird NYC), pop studs ($ Baublebar), Hart platform sandal $$ Lauren Ralph Lauren

I’m really in love with my chambray shirtdress. It’s not too long, not too short, and it works while riding a bicycle! (Major bonus.)

It’s a really great fabric for summer because it breathes. I threw on the trench because I just got back from San Francisco and I really wish I had this with me at nighttime! You SF’ers… it is COLD there!! Didn’t anyone tell SF, it’s June!?

Anyway, most of these items are pulled from the archives and just rifling through my files was really fun. I almost felt like Cher in Clueless. Speaking of which, (if you saw my Facebook, you’ll know) I’m considering putting myself on another major shopping ban until I’ve completely sketched every item in my wardrobe. What do you think, should I do it???

Jetsetting: Striped Maxi & Denim Jacket

It’s officially summer and everyone’s taking vacation!! I, too, packed my bags yet again. This time I went to Cali to see my beautiful baby nephew. In honor of the long flight, I’ve done a fashion illustration of my favorite summer outfit for flying. (PS. This doesn’t really look like me…erp, sorry. I drew it on the super shaky plane!)

A girl on the go!

Today’s Fashion Illustration:
denim jacket Hollister (or $ PacSun)Luster necklace by Good Season, Striped Maxi Dress F21 (or $$ Nordstrom), Legacy Medium Candace Carryall $$ Coachdot scarf Muji (or $$ Juicy Couture), crochet wedges Steve Madden

What to wear when jetsetting.

I’m not a big fan of the maxi. (I’m only five feet tall,) I feel it swallows me. But, for all day travel – it’s the best. It’s comfortable, versatile, and cute. Plus, it layers well; and, layering is key when you’re in the freezing airport or aren’t sure what the weather’s like at your destination.
