Yearly Archives: 2013

Thankful! My Fashion Illustration Evolution

Progress is awesome!! Thanks for all the support!!

I hope everyone is having a fantastic Thanksgiving! This year has given me so many things to be thankful for: my gorgeous new nephew, VNg asked me to marry him, a fabulous new job, and of course the usual: my great family and friends.

One thing I’m extremely thankful for is the incredible support and encouragement I’ve received while doing Sketchbook Closet. I wanted to share how far I feel I’ve come in just a year. This blog was supposed to be a fun outlet for me – but also help me hone my skills. While things haven’t turned out exactly the way I expected (what does?) I’ve definitely seen “improvement” in my sketching ability (especially speed)! It’s exciting to be able to see the difference over the past year.

Thanks so much everyone, I wouldn’t have been able to keep on posting without everyone’s super kind words!!!

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday!

Kate Spade: Waverly Street Drew Handbag

Fashion illustration of my favorite Kate Spade handbag, the Waverly Street Drew bag.Kate Spade $$ Waverly Street Drew Bag (On sale for $199!)

If you follow my instagram you may have seen a page in my sketchbook with all of my handbags. I was toying around with the idea of doing a “bag gallery” of all the bags I own. Most of you thought it was a fun idea (I do too!) I’m still trying to figure out how I want to format it. But, for now – here’s an entry into the archives for that plan.

This fashion illustration is of one of my favorite handbags – My Kate Spade Waverly Street Drew satchel.

I actually got this baby on Gilt during a flash sale. Sites like Gilt get me every time (which is why I don’t shop them often.) You know how they only let you hold an item in your shopping cart for a limited amount of time? That stresses me out! Plus – competing with all the other shoppers for items as soon as the sale goes live?! No wonder this was an impulse buy!!

Fortunately, it turned out to be a great find. I love it. It’s the perfect size, has lots of cute details, and is perfect for lady-like functions such as baby showers and tea time!

Oddly enough, this is VNg’s favorite handbag. He really loves it for some reason… It’s funny to me when boys have very strong preferences to fashion.

Congratulations to the two winners of the giveaway. They are Claire – and – Victoria (of Oh-So Pretty)!!

Thanks to everyone for participating and offering suggestions for the future of the blog. It seems like most of you just want the hits to keep on coming. I will definitely try to continue to deliver great outfits with a mix of price points. And, I promise to focus on what to wear during these super cold days!

Some of my favorite suggestions were: more gift guides, Instagram videos and tutorials, tech accessory and soft goods round-ups, and collaborations.

I’ve been wanting to do some sort of tutorial for a while, but just haven’t been sure how to spin it. I’ll be sure to add it to the line-up. I really think having some videos on Instagram could be really cool… although I’m not sure how I would videotape and draw at the same time. (I guess VNg would have to help…)

And, I would really love to do some more collaborations. Anyone out there who is interested and has any ideas — shoot me an email – I’d love to hear about it!!

Thanks again…. and thanks for viewing! Happy Humpday!!

Grey Denim and Double Zippers

Pretty J.Crew colorblock double zipper sweater with Free People light grey ultra skinny jeans

Today’s Fashion Illustration:
double zipper color-block sweater $$ J.Crew or $ Gapgrey skinny jeans $ Free People or $$$ Acne, oxfords $ Modclothpose inspired by Yewon Kim (previously) of GirlSack

I am IN LOVE with this sweater I got from J.Crew. It is so cute and I love the double zipper detailing!!! It’s slightly itchy so next time I might layer a button-down (the way they have it styled on the site.) J.Crew is giving a promo of 25% off off your purchase of $100 or more… so dooo it (with code: GOSHOP. By the way, a friend and I made a late night Zara trip the other day and… did I mention I am a complete shopping enabler…?)

In other news, I just got these grey skinny jeans from Free People. I have been looking for grey jeans for a while and I was obsessed with ones I saw on Oh-So Pretty… but, I thought this FP pair was more realistic for my (wedding planning) real-life budget. The FP pair are pretty spandex-y so they are SUPER tight. But, if you squeeze in – they look great!! I had to shorten them (of course) but I didn’t have to slim them down at the ankle, which was fantastico.

I feel like these grey jeans and this color-block sweater are going to be some of my winter staples… What are you in love with this season?

Oh yeah, don’t forget to enter the giveaway if you haven’t already. I’ll be choosing the winner this Sunday and announcing early next week – so… enter!

Thanks for viewing today’s fashion illustration, hope you liked it!

Boy Style: Franklin Clinton of GTA V

Franklin Clinton of GTAV Fashion Illustration

Today’s Fashion illustration:
$$$ Marc by Marc Jacobs Leather & Wool Jacket, $ BLK DNM Tee, $ Straight Chino Pant or $$ RVCA Slim Pants, $$$$ Jimmy Choo Barlowe High-Top Sneakers

I just finished playing the story in GTA V, so I was really excited about doing a menswear related post. (Surprisingly, a decent amount of viewers are guys and have been making menswear requests. Yay!! Hi, guy readers!)

Since Franklin is probably most relevant to my readers he was the natural choice to style.  (I doubt Trevor ever steps foot in a store. And, Amanda’s probably buying all of Michael’s outfits.)  Although, I did love this quilted wool jacket from A.P.C. and these Rag & Bone Rowan Boots (perfect for Trevor.) And, I could definitely see Michael in these John Varvatos boat shoes.

I think once Franklin finds himself rolling in a bit of extra dough, he would enjoy some nicer pieces in his wardrobe.  I love the Marc by Marc Jacobs leather mix color-blocked jacket.  It’s an upgraded staple to the regular collegiate jacket.  And these Jimmy Choo sneakers… amazing! I love the subtle edge the zipper hardware gives them.  The hefty price tag will likely have Lamar & Tanisha calling him out as “going Vinewood.” But, hey, after scoring big a guy deserves to treat himself. Right?

Am I the only one out there partaking in a little bit of Rockstar’s madness?  What did you guys think of Sketchbook Closet’s first menswear post? Should I keep them coming?

What I Wore: My Engagement Party Outfit

Lanvin blanc inspired dress.

Lanvin bridal blanc inspired dress for our engagement party.

VNg proposed right before my birthday so we celebrated with most of our friends the night of my party. But, we didn’t get to see our family, so we decided to throw an intimate engagement party. (Other brides out there, did you have an engagement party? We also thought it was a nice way to introduce the families.)

Searching for the place was almost as stressful as finding the real venue (haha, yeah right. More on that next time.) We ate in a new place nearly every night for two weeks trying to find the right spot. (Mad props to VNg as probably one of the most patient and supportive guys ever. He’s been incredible during the planning process–humoring my obsessive perfectionism. Sorry, other dudes whose girlfriends/wives read this blog, but it’s true.)

In the end, we found the cutest spot ever in Union City, NJ. We had a great contact (Christine!) who was very accommodating. The food was good and everyone had a great time!

As you might remember, I LOVE Lanvin’s Blanche collection. So, I knew I wanted to wear something like this stunner. Believe it or not, I don’t have $3-4K to blow on a dress. So, naturally I decided to make one. (Yes, I know just how to create extra tasks when I’m already stretched thin. I can’t be the only one, right?!?!)

The Lanvin is made of scuba material. Mine’s stretch cotton; in retrospect, I wish I’d chosen something with a little spandex and a little more substance. (Throughout the day, it held some pretty severe creases. Womp womp.) But, considering I hadn’t sewn something that complex since college, I think it looked decent.  (The whole thing was lined and the bodice even had boning!)

I like the simplicity of the Lanvin dress, but I added decorative stitching at the side seams to  accentuate the waistline. (If you want to see, check out Instagram.)

Well, there you go. I hope you guys liked the first (of many? should I do more??) “Wedding Wednesday.”

Also, don’t forget to enter the giveaway to win an original piece of artwork (by me) and a cute convertible handbag!

Re-launch: Monday 10/28

working on a re-launch for my fashion illustration blog
Maybe it’s fitting that this month Sketchbook Closet turned one year old.  I’ve been reflecting on why I created it, what I hoped to gain, and whether or not I should continue it. I’m pretty ashamed of my lack of posts.  (I definitely have a deeper appreciation/respect for those bloggers out there who consistently deliver awesome content.)

I wanted this to be a work in progress… a place for me to grow, experiment, and evolve.

Some of you know that I recently started a new full-time job, am in the process of launching an exciting side-project, and VNg and I are planning our wedding.  So, finding the time seems daunting. That said, I hope to post at least twice a week.

I’m looking forward to an exciting new re-launch this coming Monday (including Sketchbook Closet’s first ever giveaway!!!)

I have a lot of fresh ideas and fun outfits to share so, stay tuned. (If you have anything you’d like to see… Let me know! I’d love to hear.)

In the meantime, check out my Instagram where I always post updates and daily photos.

Fashion Sketchbook – Lanvin Blanche Bridal Collection

So, I am seriously obsessed with Lanvin’s 2013 Blanche collection (…not to mention their $1000 bride t-shirt. If I win the lottery, this is the first thing I buy for our wedding! Yes, I’ve definitely got my priorities in order.) So, I hope you like this bride-tastic page from my fashion sketchbook.

similar styles: fit & flare $$ ABS, tiered ruffle $$ ABSstrapless peplum dress $$ Alice + Olivia (I actually really love the ABS by Allen Schwartz alternative to the fit & flare. I might buy it and save it for my bridal shower!)

Any how, Lanvin has a bunch of other luxuriously adorable accessories for the stylish bride. I like this shi shi pen & these save the dates.

Since I’m still trying to pay off my student loans, I won’t be purchasing any of these gorgeous beauties for my upcoming engagement party. Instead, I’m going to attempt to make something similar!

Fashion Sketchbook – J.Crew Fall Catalog

I pulled a couple more pages from my fashion sketchbook… this time inspired by the J.Crew fall catalog. (You might have seen a sneak peek on my Instagram last night.) Today’s post is a little more about my process and where I want to take Sketchbook Closet in the future. I hope you enjoy!

J.Crew fall fashion sketch - trend: sporty

I’m a huge huge fan of J.Crew. So, pulling pages from their catalogs for practice is easy and fun. (I just have to be careful not to be tempted to purchase everything from the pages.)

Drawing with marker can be a little bit daunting, but I really like the focus it forces. (Plus, it’s just the sketchbook – and I think there’s a lot of merit to not keeping your sketchbook “precious.”)
